Research
TSP
The Tracking, tracing, Sensoring Platform (TSP) aims to research and develop of a new generation of electronic Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for commercial use. With TSP technology it is possible to trace the precise location of a tag and communicate with it.
Potential applications for the tracking and calculation power of TSP include logistics and supply management, registration of office equipment, and tracking of people and material in the built environment and at airports. For example, hospital out-patients could be directed to the right department via smart signs that read information from an RFID tag in their hospital id cards.
The project will focus on developing RFID tags with the following attributes:
- minimal battery power consumption
- precise tracking, even inside buildings
- the ability to perform calculations and store data
Base station antennas will be developed to send and receive tag signals using minimal energy levels to avoid electromagnetic interference.
TSP technology will lead to new applications and open up new markets in RFID for the participating organizations. The commercial exploitation of TSP is expected to generate high quality jobs in the region and stimulate the development of innovative spin-offs. Three regional businesses are collaborating on this project: Nedap, Recore Systems, and Smart Signs Solutions, together with the University of Twente. This project has joint funding from the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union and the Dutch Provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel.
Smart Surroundings
Smart Signs is originally a spin-off of Twente University, chair in Pervasive Systems. The concept Smart Signs is one of the results of the research project ‘Smart Surrounding’ that started in 2004.
The objective of the project is the development of a framework for the design of the so-called smart surroundings; smart, technology rich environments that support users in their daily work and life.
In 2007 Maria Lijding and Nirvana Meratnia (University of Twente), Hartmut Benz (Twente Institute for Wireless and Mobile Communications BV) and Agnieszka Matysiak Szóstek (Eindhoven Universiteit of Technology) investigated the Smart Signs system. The results were published in I/O Vivat, the official verenigingsorgaan of Inter-Actief. The research was financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The research results show that in comparison with traditional signs Smart Signs users
- find their way faster
- make less mistakes
- are more satisfied about
- the use of the signs in general
- the efficiency
- the helpfulness
- the learnability
